A tradition of the Day of the Dead is a deeply rooted custom in Mexico, as it is a day when the lines between the earthly and the spiritual are thin and blurred, resulting in a festival of colors, flavors, and senses, where life is celebrated by remembering the dead. Undoubtedly, this may seem paradoxical to cultures unfamiliar with this particular worldview, but it conveys an overflowing vital essence characteristic of the Mexican people, which is very attractive to locals and visitors and deeply ingrained in its society.

In Puerto Vallarta, one of the most beautiful vacation destinations in Mexico, this traditional celebration takes place across all settings, marked by the main feature of November 2nd: the celebration of life and tribute to those who have passed away.

Puerto Vallarta is known for being a traditional coastal village that has the necessary infrastructure to accommodate international tourism. Its attractions are numerous, making it a favorite spot for many travelers seeking a vacation destination with an excellent climate and an inviting atmosphere.

Among offerings and altars, enjoy the Day of the Dead in Vallarta! You will be amazed as you watch parades of people dressed as the catrina and various representations of death with a traditional Mexican style, traditional dance and music performances, and the delicious treats prepared for the occasion, such as candied pumpkin and pan de muerto, among others.

Altars are an important part of the Day of the Dead, and in Puerto Vallarta, you can experience diverse and colorful representations created in various locations by friends and family of the deceased in their honor. The characteristic vibrant colors stand out in the altars, and their elements hold meanings directly linked to the transition from the world of the living to the world of the dead. Offerings, papel picado, candles, flowers, photos, and the favorite foods of the deceased are some of the elements that form part of these spectacular altars. Pan de muerto and sugar skulls are, without question, the gastronomic highlights of this very special day. The favorite objects of the deceased are also placed on the altars with great care.

Puerto Vallarta’s city council, along with civil society organizations, tends to organize the Puerto Vallarta Day of the Dead Festival each year, featuring shows, contests for catrinas, and other activities where both adults and children can participate.

Cemeteries throughout the municipality prepare to welcome Vallartans, relatives, and friends of the deceased, who are honored on this very special day when the living prepare to joyfully and celebratively welcome the souls’ visit. A beautiful tradition that deserves to be appreciated!
