Visit Mérida and you’ll find reasons to wish the days never end. The capital of Yucatán is filled with tradition and culture, color and music, gastronomy and dance, all spread so widely that no single day can be lived without joy. And of course, all of this is framed in a destination of cobblestone streets, smiling people who greet you as you pass, and the magic of nature right at your fingertips. Mérida is everything you could wish for and even more than you could imagine.

With its lively rhythm, cheerful music, joyous spirit, and delightful steps that invite the body to overflow with movement and burst into happiness, Sundays take on a special hue in Mérida. Those who think this day of the week evokes nostalgia or causes disinterest have clearly never been to Mérida. Discover “Mérida on Sunday”!

The Sunday journey is eagerly anticipated all week long. This day is lived with great enthusiasm, as culture leaves its usual venues and takes over the streets, fills the air, and spreads to everyone. The chosen place for this gathering, which has been happening for over 20 years, is the Historic Center. This location is no coincidence, as the event aims to highlight the identity of Yucatán, showcasing its way of life, its history, and its deep-rooted traditions.

Taking part in this tradition is the perfect excuse to have fun with family or friends. During this time, there isn’t a single free moment, as cultural and artistic offerings abound, all while there are also plenty of opportunities to savor the delicious gastronomy of Yucatán.

On one hand, there are the Regional Vaquerías, a dance that originated years ago on ranches and became a trademark for cattle branding. These were also festivities held in honor of patron saints, sometimes lasting for several days. Today, recreating the Vaquerías is without a doubt a way to keep a tradition alive that has several influences, mainly Mayan and Spanish. Moreover, this includes the staging of a mestizo wedding.

Folia is also part of Sunday celebrations, with the colorful costumes and the wit of their “bombas,” which are rhymes recited by a partner as the woman showcases her dancing skills and shines in her beautifully crafted attire. Those who are inspired can participate in the Great Dance Marathon, another central aspect of the Sunday event.

Children are not left out! They too will find plenty to enjoy during the warm Yucatecan nights. Parque de las Américas will be waiting to bring laughter and fun from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Finally, Santa Lucía Park and Compositor Garden are ideal spots to be deeply moved by the singing of those who carry music in their souls and wish to share it.

Mérida on Sunday is the perfect way to end one week and begin another with pure color and rhythm!
