Between mountains as white as snow, the day-to-day life, a community rises to take advantage of the land, just as the ancestral peoples did. Development and modernity have arrived at Las Coloradas salt flats. Yes, that is undeniable, but even so, this small coastal town in the State of Yucatán still preserves its humble way of life, respect for others, and the eagerness to welcome travelers who come to delight in so much diversity and richness. Thank you, Mother Earth, for everything you have given to Mexico!
In Las Coloradas, there are no supermarkets open 24 hours a day, nor luxurious restaurants, but you will always find a small shop offering a great local delicacy and treating you as if you were family.
Las Coloradas is a horizon filled with colors in Yucatán. How is it possible that in the same place, there coexist salt deserts that, like buttons, maintain purity and balance; mangroves, so wild and delightful that they invite adventure; and beautiful white sand beaches kissed by the furious waters of the Gulf of Mexico? The diversity of Mexican lands is sensational!
Las Coloradas is a very small town, but during your visit to the Yucatán Peninsula, you cannot miss it. This fishing village does not have luxury hotels, restaurants, or casinos; however, it invites you to enjoy its very little-visited and unexplored natural surroundings.
Doesn’t that sound tempting? A natural paradise of salts, mangroves, and turquoise blue waters! Did you know that Las Coloradas Beach was declared a Marine Turtle Protection Area by the Federal Government? Yes, they are a true sanctuary and become the site where turtles come to lay eggs. What species? The Carey, the White, and the Loggerhead.
On the beaches of Las Coloradas, only recreational and environmental education activities are allowed. Why? Perhaps simply to maintain that excellent natural balance that characterizes this coastal community in Yucatán.
The Las Coloradas salt flats gained national attention with the famous video by Aleks Syntek, a well-known Mexican musician. He chose the Las Coloradas salt flats to film his video “Corazones Invencibles.” And although it is not possible to take guided tours of the factory that drives the salt industry, just admiring and walking through these beautiful salt flats will be enough.
Do you love fishing? Well, here you will surely find a local who will teach you and take you on a ride through the Gulf of Mexico. Tourism development is not what characterizes this small village, but the courtesy of a good local will be enough to help you experience this impressive sea. Don’t forget to observe the mangrove’s flora and fauna and allow yourself to be captivated by the beauty and elegance of the birds—this is yet another alternative offered by this small community.
Stay nearby, whether in Tizimín, which is 65 km away, or in Río Lagartos, just 12 km away. Salt, mangroves, and sea: an excellent combination! Is it?
