Just A few steps from the city of Merida hides one of the treasures best kept of the Yucatan Peninsula. Dzibilchaltun, whose name in the maya language symbolizes the legend “The place where there is writing on the stones”, is an archaeological site of vital importance in the historical reconstruction of the ancient peoples of mexico. A number of buildings scattered on more than 17 hectares, and that until our days, are presented in a state of preservation far-fetched.

It is believed that Dzibilchaltun was one of the huge urban centers, headquarters economic, political and religious, that were blooming to the north of the Yucatan. Today, while we do not yet have with precise specifications that allow a close accurate to its source, is a site of immense importance because it is considered, that yes, the city is the most ancient, at least until the time, of the region.

The length and width of the enclosure, located ten minutes from the city of Merida, you can appreciate a series of buildings which were excavated by experts, mexican archaeologists. But best of all, seems to be the possibility of believing that Dzibilchaltun holds many secrets: in fact it is estimated that the citadel indian told in its time of greater splendor with more than eight thousand buildings. Only a few have been unearthed in the present and already with them enough to understand much of the customs, worldviews and traditions of the peoples that inhabited them.

The city’s most prominent of Merida in what concerns history and culture features twelve white roads that depart from the center of the grounds and are heading towards the buildings peripheral. One of them, probably the most charming, leads visitors towards a vast and dreamed cenote known as Xlakáh, a site in which in addition have been found remains of bones and objects of daily life that allowed to reconstruct a large part of the past history.

One of the most outstanding buildings of the ruins is the Temple of the Seven Dolls, known with this name because in its interior was found a few years ago as an offering to the gods composed by seven figures mud in human form. But in addition, this fascinating temple, can be seen each equinox one of the boxes most incredible of the continent, when the sun passes through the main gate, completely created of stone.

Dzibilchaltun is one of the sites favourites if you are looking for on your next holiday by Merida is to thoroughly understand the root, the origins of political thought, religious and economic of the mayan civilization.
