Chetumal is a young city in the south of Mexico, which, thanks to commercial activity, grew significantly in the last part of the 20th century and became, due to this growth, the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. This fantastic destination had its glory years until the 1990s when it was a tax-free zone and a paradise for shopping lovers, where you could purchase high-quality products at a very low cost. Today, the place is no longer a free zone, but you can still find excellent products at lower prices than in any other part of the country. This characteristic attracts thousands of tourists from various corners of Mexico and the world.

Undoubtedly, the typical handicrafts of the region are the most sought-after products by travelers who visit Chetumal. These traditional items, influenced by the Mayan culture, are made using ancestral techniques and are characterized by their colorful designs. Currently, the sale of these products is one of the main economic supports of the city. Textiles are the predominant handicrafts in the area, often taking the form of beautiful cotton or silk garments adorned with vibrant natural dyes. Other typical creations of the region include jewelry boxes made from ostrich eggshells; lamps crafted with pink conch shells; carved wooden furniture, hammocks, masks, glass objects, ceramics, hats, sandals, among others.

Throughout Chetumal, different stores and markets have been established where you can buy all the aforementioned products and many more! These establishments offer visitors the opportunity to admire the customs and cultural expressions of Quintana Roo’s capital. Many of these markets also feature various restaurants serving delicious typical dishes from the area. One of the most important locations in the city is called Parisiense, specializing mainly in the sale of textiles. In addition, there are many stores to visit along the Avenida de los Héroes.

But in Chetumal, shopping enthusiasts will find much more than just handicraft markets, as there are also numerous stores and shopping centers selling a wide variety of products like jewelry, clothing from world-famous brands, children’s toys, perfumes, and more. One of the best malls in the region is Plaza de las Américas, a massive structure with numerous stores, restaurants, movie theaters, outdoor spaces, and a play area for children. It is an ideal place to visit on weekends with family or as a couple and enjoy pleasant moments.

Fill your suitcase with colorful souvenirs during your trip to Chetumal, and discover the Caribbean art of the region!
