The Yucatan Peninsula, located to the south of the country, and bathed by the waters of the Caribbean Sea, is one of the places that offers best landscapes in Mexico. There is No one who doesn’t want a holiday where the sun accompanies you all day and where the crystalline sea and the white sand are the perfect excuse to spend days at the different beaches.

In the Yucatan there are many destinations that stand out for offering this proposal. One of these cities is Mérida which, in addition to protect important archaeological maya ruins, is the capital of the state of Yucatan. Merida is a city that perfectly combines modernity with history, thus offering the possibility of living a complete vacation.

Mérida is the city of colonial Yucatán. In this sense, the Historic Centre appears as the best place to start enjoying a journey that we confirm that this is so. In fact, most of the buildings that make up the center of the city have been constructed during the colonial era.

What places we can find and visit in this area of the city?

  • San Ildefonso cathedral: built between the years of 1561 and 1598, it is the religious building most ancient of the american continent. For its construction were used stones from ancient mayan temples, so that your visit is an approach to the history and culture of this civilization. Inside, you will see a cross that symbolizes the meeting and reconciliation between the Spanish and the mayans.
  • Casa de Montejo: located to one side of the main square of the city, this corresponds to the construction of architecture of the XVI century, which highlights its facade of hewn stone.
  • Main square: also known as Independence Square, was founded along with the first traces of the city in 1542. For its age, has witnessed many important events in the city. In the year 1978, underwent a few renovations and a decade after the more radical change, which was the replacement of its platform is octagonal for a circular.
  • Municipal palace: with an interior that highlights the murals that made the renowned artist Fernando Castro Pacheco, this site was built by the government of Don Santiago Aguirre between the years 1734 and 1736.
  • Centro Cultural de Merida Olimpo: another of the buildings located on the side of the main square. In the year 1707 was owned by Francisco Avila, and in 1974 it was demolished. It was only in the year 1997, which is hereby established as a Municipal Cultural Center, being used for the realization of different workshops and courses, exhibit hall, planetarium, among others.
