Holbox is a small and cozy island in the Yucatán Peninsula, a sought-after destination for travelers looking to connect face to face with nature and immerse themselves in a few wild days. The truth is that this magical spot on the map of Mexico harbors one of the most incredible natural sceneries on the continent: with forty-two kilometers in length, Holbox Island offers 36 km of paradise-like beaches and an unlikely ecosystem variety that contains thousands of animal and plant species coexisting in their natural habitats.

Yum Balam, a protected natural area, borders Holbox, was declared as such not long ago, just ten years back, when regional authorities understood the importance of the natural wealth that this portion of land held. Its name symbolizes the Maya legend “Lord Jaguar” and spans over one hundred and fifty hectares that include precious places, among which is Isla Holbox. The latter undoubtedly serves as the preferred gateway to enter the Yum Balam area and all its riches, the best way to reach it and explore majestic landscapes overflowing with treasures.

In Yum Balam, the ocean’s crystal-clear waters sometimes become transparent, allowing for the observation of colorful seafloors filled with underwater creatures. A sanctuary for dolphins, the region features various spots, especially developed for observing these friendly mammals up close, almost touching them, as they thrive in their natural habitats. Along with the dolphins in the ocean near Isla Holbox is prolific in relation to one of Mexico’s most incredible creatures: the whale shark. An amazing adventure awaits you nearby!

The area comprises different landscapes and regions, among which the beaches are just one. On the other side, just a few steps from Isla Holbox, you will discover incredible scenery, swamps, and tropical forests teeming with indigenous flora and fauna species. Here, various activities can be practiced, all within the framework of respect that the protected area imposes, such as hiking, rappelling, zip-lining, or horseback riding along steep paths that penetrate the colorful tropical surroundings. Jaguars, pumas, ocelots, and wild cats often come out, allowing visitors to observe them from a distance, in all their splendor.
