Ecotourism has become much more than just a simple trend imposed by some travelers. Nowadays, it is one of the most beautiful ways to discover the environment, take care of it, and learn about it. The release of sea turtles is one of the ecotourism practices you can enjoy on the coast of the Mexican Pacific, and although each state has its own particularities, they all share a respect for the lives of these species, which is, honestly, thrilling.

Sea turtles are one of the few species that have survived for more than 200,000 years; however, in recent times, the number of these creatures that bring life to the ocean waters has been significantly reduced. What is the reason? One of the main ones: predator attacks. That is why, in some tourist destinations, a conservation plan for the different species of turtles has been implemented. This plan not only involves the participation of local inhabitants but also invites tourists to be part of this small yet meaningful way to help care for the planet and its natural balance.

Visit the Nuevo Vallarta Turtle Camp and take part in one of the most exciting activities of your life: the release of sea turtles.

Olive Ridley Turtles will be the stars of the experience. These are among the smallest turtles that inhabit the sea; they measure about 70 cm and weigh around 40 kilograms. Their shell is heart-shaped, and during adulthood, it takes on a truly wonderful olive-green color.

What is the experience like? Well, first, you will be taken to the camp to understand what the sea turtle conservation program is all about. Then, you will patrol the coasts of Nuevo Vallarta in search of a turtle that is nesting. Witnessing this miracle is not guaranteed, as the presence of mother turtles depends on the tide and other factors. But, oh, be patient! When a turtle is ready to lay eggs, she will dig a nest up to 40 cm deep, where she will leave about 80 eggs. Hopefully, you’ll be lucky and find one! If this does not happen, do not be discouraged, as you can return to the Turtle Camp in search of the baby turtles that are ready to head out to sea after several weeks of care.

This is an ideal outing to do as a family, where both adults and children can fully enjoy the experience. Dozens of babies are placed in plastic containers to be transported to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Each participant will take one in their hands and release it on the sand, a few meters from the water. The turtles then move on their own into the ocean.

Discover these Mexican treasures, respecting and caring for their natural balance. Help contribute to a good cause and be an active participant in this life-giving process. It will truly be unforgettable—don’t miss it!
