In the Riviera Nayarit, where the Pacific Ocean merges with the sky forming an amalgam of colors, amazing, nature takes over and all the attractions and invites you to enjoy landscapes that surprise even the traveler with more globe-trotting.

Among its fishing villages, its beaches and its charming corners, there is a place that retains a mystical special. This is the Island of Mexcaltitlán, also known as ?the Venice of Mexico? and enacted in the year 1986 as a Historic Monuments Zone by the particular beauty and incomparable with that account.

This island is located to the northeast of the town of Santiago Ixcuintla, in the State of Nayarit, and is recognized not only for being a magical place and unique in its kind by the shape that the island has, but for having been the place where was born and developed the aztec civilization, of great influence in the culture of Mexico.

Around your name, there are several versions that refer to the meaning. One of the myths holds that this island corresponds to Aztlán from whence they came out the aztecs and then be placed in the center of Mexico. Other theories, instead, argue that Mexcaltitlán want to say ?home of the Mexica or mexicans?; as a third version holds that the word Aztlán means ?place of herons?; and another says that in these lands it was in the place of the seven caves.

Beyond the legends and myths that refer to the origins of this island that arouses surprise and curiosity among many visitors, what is certain is that it is a unique place, worth knowing during a trip to the Riviera Nayarit.

Why is it dubbed as the Venice of Mexico? Is that their small streets are flooded in times of rain so there’s that tour the city in a boat to go from one side to another, reminding us of that famous european city and its unique ?vaporettos?.

When visiting it, you will find a portion of land whose form is that of an oval of 350 meters long. In its interior abounds with historic buildings, such as the Public Plaza that is located in the centre of the island; the Church of St. Peter and Paul, who is the Patron Saint of the Mexcaltecos; and to learn more about the culture of this peculiar corner of Riviera Nayarit’s nothing like a visit to the museum called The Origin and the House of Culture Luis Castillo de Leon (named after the poet born in Santiago de Ixcuintla, the village nearest to the island).

Also, on a walk around the Island, you must try some of the flavors indigenous to the place, such as the tasty Taxtihilli, a stew of pre-hispanic origin made on the basis of cooked shrimp to the broth accompanied by a mass, such as the mole pot. It is a delight!
