After the early days of colonization, Spanish traditions began to take hold in Mexico, and the Catholic Church started to occupy a very important place in society. Today, although practices from the oldest cities are still revived, over 80% of the Mexican population declare themselves devout. Among all the celebrations that take place in these lands, starting on December 12 is one of the most representative and important. Why? Because it is the day dedicated to celebrating the Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of Mexico and the Holy Mother of Latin America.

The story goes that, in 1531, the Virgin appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous man who was later canonized. When he went to collect the roses she had requested, the image of the Virgin became imprinted on his cloak. Unlike other representations of the Virgin, this one has a dark complexion and mestizo features—perhaps one of the reasons why Latin Americans have adopted her as their own.

In Mexico, as in many other countries in the Americas, December 12 is a day to honor “La Morena”. In each town, the celebrations take on unique character, and Sayulita is no exception: come celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe and enjoy an authentically multicultural festival, filled with color and tradition!

The town dresses itself in festive and faithful spirit; each neighborhood gives its own identity to the celebrations. How? Each creates a carriage where a teenage girl poses, representing the Holy Mother and faithfully reproducing the pose of the Dark Virgin in the sacred mantle. Each neighborhood presents their version of the Virgin’s apparition at Tepeyac, and once the carriage heads towards the center of Sayulita, the neighbors from every area escort it, holding candles in their hands, singing or praying. Additionally, you will always see a band and a troupe of dancers who, in the best way they know how, honor La Morena of Tepeyac. Traditional dances such as La Conquista and Los Matachines are never missing!

When everyone reaches the meeting point, prayers multiply, and the respect for the divine gains an inexplicable meaning. While admiring the floral and rustic arrangements prepared by the women in honor of the Virgin, you will sense the cries and supplications, along with an overwhelming sense of calm that completely overtakes the atmosphere.

Celebrating the Dark Virgin, Queen of Latin America, is a must during your stay in Mexico. While the massive celebrations take place in Mexico City, home to the main sanctuary that houses the mantle, in Sayulita the festivities take on a different character. Because it is not a celebration attracting pilgrims from around the world, you can enjoy an authentic gathering among neighbors, where you can partake in the purest beliefs of their community.

Escape to the Riviera Nayarit in December, take advantage of its traditions and beliefs, immerse yourself in the scenery, and carry the best memories of paradise, forever engraved in your mind.
