The legacy of the maya civilization is present in different sites and regions of Mexico. But without a doubt, the city of Merida, capital of Yucatan state, is one of the most representative of this heritage, of great importance in the history and culture of the country.

Izamal is the perfect combination between the legacy of the mayan civilization and the colonial splendour present in the constructions and zones are most important in the village. When you arrive to this picturesque destination, you will surely tell you that it is known as the ?the city of the three cultures?. Do you know why is called so? Because here live the pre-hispanic past and the colonial with the contemporary culture of Mexico, a feature of the last few years. Also Izamal is known because, in antiquity, was the place chosen to live by Zamná, a mythical character of the mayan civilization.

One of the main sites to visit in Izamal is the Temple of the Immaculate Conception and former Convent of San Antonio de Padua, the home of the congregation of franciscans and is considered one of the catholic monasteries of greater antiquity in the whole of America, with a surface area of 8 thousand square meters. This set is located on a part of what was formerly the hill ?Pap-hol-chac?, destroyed by the Spanish conquerors to build this site. At present, it can only be known inside and out but the Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 20.30 you can watch the show ?The light of the mayans?.

Another of the tours that you can do in Izamal is the archaeological site, widely recognized because this village is the oldest in Yucatan. In the ceremonial plaza it is possible to see the remains of the five pyramids that knew how to guard the one; this place was also chosen by the mayans to worship the God Itzamná. In this tour, you’ll be able to see the temple of Kinich Kak Moo, which has a square at the top, used to allegedly carry out different rituals.

The Centro Cultural y Artesanal Izamal, located in a mansion of the XVI century, is another of the places that you have to know in your journey through this Magical Village; here you will find handmade pieces which are representative of the mayan culture, and also to take any gift of folk art made by local artisans.
