Among the many attractions that you should not miss is the Museum of Maya Culture, a cultural relic located on Avenue of Heroes, and considered as one of the most important in the state of Quintana Roo. Through its reproductions, genuine elements, and interactive exhibits, tourists have the chance to learn more about the architecture, way of life, worldview, and calendrical system of this marvelous pre-Hispanic civilization. You can’t miss it!

This site, which was inaugurated at the beginning of 1993, has a modern and avant-garde style and is the only one of its kind in Latin America. Its different exhibition rooms, offices, and auditorium are arranged around a beautiful central garden that features abundant subtropical vegetation and life-sized replicas of the typical houses built by the Maya during their peak times.

The Museum of Maya Culture is divided into 8 sections that cover various topics:

  • Room I: emphasizes the different historical periods of the Maya and how they spread across southern Mexico and other countries like Belize and Guatemala.
  • Room II: refers to the relationship the Maya had with nature, primarily with mountains and seas.
  • Room III: focuses on their particular architecture and urban development. In this space, you can learn everything that has been discovered so far about their impressive constructions.
  • Room IV: showcases how trade was maintained between the different cities of this ancient indigenous civilization, as well as the activities they carried out to feed and survive, such as agriculture, hunting, fishing, among others.
  • Room V: describes the way the Maya understood the world around them, which allows for an understanding of their view of reality, the underworld, and the sky.
  • Room VI: is considered the most interesting room in the museum because it explains the scientific achievements of the Maya, such as their organization of the solar system, their famous calendar, astronomical discoveries, writing methods, and mathematical calculations.
  • Room VII: focuses on the interactions they had with other pre-Hispanic peoples, such as the Teotihuacans and the Toltecs.
  • Room VIII: shows the causes of their disappearance, the relationship with the Spanish, and the different prophecies their priests made about these events and the end of their days.

The museum opens its doors to the public from Monday to Sunday, and touring all its rooms takes approximately 2 hours. Visitors can see archaeological relics such as statues, funerary elements, stone vessels, objects, furniture, jewelry, paintings, and many more artifacts. Each of these areas is equipped with interactive screens and sound effects, making the journey even more astonishing.
