The natural postcards found across the lands of the Mexican Caribbean are truly breathtaking. On the surface, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, tropical forests, and palm trees swaying to the rhythm of the coastal winds take center stage in Mother Nature’s grand performance. As if that weren’t enough, the depths of the sea add to the spectacle with some of its most beautiful scenes. Coral reefs, inhabited by sponges, colorful fish, and sea turtles, are the favorite spots for lovers of adventure and ecotourism. Viva Mexico and all its wonders!
If during your next vacation you want to rest in heaven on earth, visit the state of Yucatán. Want a recommendation? The Alacranes Reef: a bird sanctuary and underwater paradise. Where is it? Right in the Gulf of Mexico, 130 km north of the coast of Progreso Municipality.
Being able to grasp the beauty of this place is practically impossible; there’s nothing better than discovering it through direct experience! It’s not enough to think of it as one of the most important Protected Areas in the country, with an area of more than 333,000 hectares; nor would it suffice to mention that its shores are practically untouched. On top of that, the Alacranes Reef is comprised of five dreamlike islands that come together in perfect harmony, creating a true paradise: Pérez, Menina (Cornezuelos or Blanca), Long (Birds), Desertora (Dead or West), and Banida for the.
This National Marine Park was declared as such in 1994, with its primary goal being to protect the physical and biological diversity of the area and maintain its natural genetic wealth. Imagine the immense treasures hidden beneath its crystal-clear turquoise waters!
The predominant vegetation consists of shrublands, paradises that have become the chosen home of exotic Caribbean birds, with seagulls and pelicans being the most common in the area. Additionally, lizards and sea turtles, like the hawksbill turtle, roam the islands as if no one else exists but them.
The underwater wealth is fascinating. Imagine that the Alacranes Reef is the most studied underwater complex in Mexican seas due to its extraordinary features; there are more than 24 species of stony corals there!
What can you do in this paradise? Dive into coral reefs, which are true miracles, and why not swim alongside sea turtles? You can also enjoy sport fishing, with some of the main species including jack, mahi-mahi, tarpon, and grouper. Another option is birdwatching – how about unexpectedly encountering more than 7,500 pairs of birds? What a wonder!
To preserve the natural balance, this Protected Area does not have tourist infrastructure. But rather than being a disadvantage, this is truly an opportunity to enjoy genuine contact with nature in its full splendor. Are you up for camping? The designated area for this is the West Beach of Pérez Island. Be especially cautious when building campfires! It’s better not to light them, as they interfere with the nesting of sea turtles that come to these beaches to lay their eggs.
Enjoy nature in its wildest form! Visit Yucatán!
