The Mexican Caribbean is one of the most beautiful regions in the world, made up of a collection of towns, cities, archaeological sites and nature reserves that draw hundreds of visitors throughout the year.

In this area the Riviera Maya takes center stage, with its main destinations including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Punta Allen and Puerto Morelos. These places, backed by incredible natural beauty, become the meeting point for those looking for a paradisiacal spot to enjoy their holidays. Rest, adventure, nature and top-quality services make this region a favorite for enjoying the sea, the sun and wide stretches of white sand.

Among all the spots you can visit in this zone, some stand out for their unique characteristics and intrinsic appeal. A clear example is the Reserva de la Biósfera Sian Ka’an, the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean.

Considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1987, this place covers half a million hectares and contains a mix of beaches, dunes, cenotes, coral reefs and tropical rainforest that serve as refuge for hundreds of bird species and other animals amid native vegetation.

Sian Ka’an, which in the Mayan language means “where the sky is born” or “gift from the sky”, hosts a variety of ecosystems. Low and medium forests, savannas and a portion of the world’s second-largest barrier reef, which stretches 110 kilometers and is known as the Mesoamerican Reef System.

There are also more than 20 archaeological zones. Among them is Muyil, which in its time was an important trading center and where you’ll also find the lagoon of the same name and a lookout that offers an excellent panoramic view of the whole region, with the wonderful Caribbean Sea in the background.

What can you do here besides enjoy its natural beauty and picturesque landscape? The Reserva de Sian Ka’an can be visited at any time of day, but it’s ideal to start very early to watch the sunrise from here. For that, it’s best to rent a cabin or book a full-day tour with Cesiak, the Centro Ecológico de Sian Ka’an. It’s an ecotourism center that encourages visiting this place in a conscious, responsible way and with respect for the environment. All tours and activities offered by this organization aim to raise funds for the development of various environmental education programs.

Among the tours Cesiak offers is sport fishing which, with expert guides and aboard fiberglass boats, lets you enjoy a truly special afternoon. You can also opt for the kayak tour; in that case you can choose to go with a guide or on your own.

If you have the chance to travel through this beautiful Mexican region, pick a tour to visit the Reserva de Sian Ka’an and discover the most astonishing natural wonders the Riviera Maya protects!
