Bringing a dog on a trip to Cancun

Many people say that their family wouldn’t be complete without their dog, and some pet owners go so far as to bring their four-legged friends with them when they travel. There are a few important things, however, that people bringing their dogs with them to Cancun should know.

For a dog to be allowed to come to Cancun, its owner must present an International Health Certification as well as a complete vaccination record for the pet. The certification form cannot be obtained longer than 72 hours prior to the trip and the dog must have proof of vaccination for rabies, distemper, hepatitis and leptospirosis. All vaccines must have occurred between 30 days and one year before your arrival date in Cancun.

There are also regulations in relation to bringing dogs back to their countries of origin, so owners should check with their veterinarian before their trip, to learn what they should do to ensure that their pet will safely and easily accompany them home.

Once vaccines and the dog’s health are in order, owners should check in ahead of time with their airline, their hotel and the immigration office at the airport in Cancun to learn of any additional regulations or last-minute fees.
