Xoximilco: An Afternoon on Cancun’s Canal Boats

Xochimilco, una tarde entre canales y tradicion para conocer Cancun

Across Mexico’s vast, diverse and endlessly appealing territory there are destinations for every taste and travel style. If you want beach, sun and sea, you can choose between the coasts of the Caribe and the Pacífico, and you’ll also find bodies of water like lakes, lagoons, waterfalls and rivers. You’ll also have plenty of options for adventure travel, eco-tourism and visits to one-of-a-kind natural settings.

But one of the most rewarding ways to travel is to dive into a place’s culture, history and traditions. Mexico is full of sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list — one of them is Xochimilco, which in the native Nahuatl language means “field of flowers,” a magical place best explored by boat along canals that date back to pre-Hispanic times.

On your trip to Cancún you can enjoy a replica of these traditional canals near the famous Xcaret eco-park, known as the Xoximilco tour. There a memorable adventure awaits: a modern take on this legendary ride, wrapped in the charm of the Mar Caribe and its surroundings.

What can you do at Xoximilco? What’s its main draw? Without a doubt the highlight is the cruise along the rainwater canals in a boat called a trajinera, historically used to transport flowers, fruit and vegetables. Today it’s a fun way to travel where music and tradition take center stage.

Además de este tradicional recorrido, el tour incluye:

  • Cena con lo mejor de la gastronomía mexicana: not only will you enjoy a delightful evening under the moonlight as you glide through the canals, you’ll also savor tasty Mexican dishes that perfectly complement this tradition-filled outing.
  • Barra libre de bebidas: what better way to match those flavors than with a glass of legendary tequila? You’ll also find a wide selection of beers, soft drinks and aguas frescas.
  • Música típica mexicana: to complete an unforgettable night, live groups perform their best melodies. Between mariachis, bolero, jarocho and marimba ensembles, you’ll be treated to a true Mexican fiesta.

This excursion runs Monday to Saturday, between 7 and 12pm. To make the most of each activity we recommend wearing comfortable clothes. The tour lasts approximately 3 hours and children over 5 years old can participate.

If you choose to vacation on the Mexican Caribbean coast, pick the Xoximilco tour and enjoy an afternoon of canals and tradition in Cancún! You’ll see it has nothing to envy from the traditional ride offered in Ciudad de México — you’ll be surprised by the similarities! Enjoy!
