What can be said about Mérida, the beautiful capital of Yucatán? Mérida is one of those places that leaves you speechless, and when you do manage to say something, it will certainly fall short. Its beauty and the exceptional nature of its attractions are inexplicable, but it’s worth trying to describe them nonetheless. Its corners, full of colors; its colonial traits, which lend it a picturesque and unique air; its streets overflowing with attractions, and its people, so kind-hearted. In Mérida, you have everything and so much more.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable vacation, choosing this Mexican corner ensures a fun trip. And why not start right now by reading about the sites to discover? The first recommendation is dedicated to all nature lovers: Visit the Centennial Zoological Park on your trip to Mérida!

It is possible to trace the original project that proposed the creation of this space to the first hundred years of Mexico’s Independence. No doubt an important reason, which supported such significant aspirations. Initially, the site emerged as a Botanical Garden, but the plans grew: this led to the addition of an avenue with a gazebo, a lake for sports activities, some birds, among other things. Even the original name was changed: from being called Independence Park, it began to be known as Centennial, after a type of tree named as such and planted there.

Over time, and with the idea of highlighting the importance of the Park as well as strengthening ties with society, a change of course was made: it became a Zoological Garden, under the supervision of Mexico (Mexico City), incorporating many species and later, the aviary.

The place offers a refreshing atmosphere; it is the perfect escape for those seeking something new while enjoying nature in its splendor. Not only is it possible to see different species of mammals and exotic birds, such as the Bengal tiger, the military macaw, lions, hippos, white-tailed deer, among others, but you can also take part in activities aimed at people of all ages, including spaces for seniors, who have their own dance lessons to have fun in style. There’s also the reptile house, which fascinates and arouses curiosity among visitors, making it one of the park’s main attractions.

Relaxing to the sound of water is possible if you sit by the fountain in the Zoological Park, or even if you’re up for a canoe ride. Mérida’s excellent weather justifies enjoying an evening outdoors, so don’t forget to bring a basket with some delicious food and drinks. The train ride is also a recommended option that allows you to explore the park’s surroundings, getting delightfully lost among the trees. Sandbox areas and play spaces complement the leisure offerings. You can visit the place on your own, but guided tours are also available.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best areas to enjoy family time and visit one of the most beautiful places in Mérida.
