Mexico is extremely beautiful in each of its spots. But, definitely, on the coast of the state of Quintana Roo, it seems to show its most perfect side, with more vivid colors than you’ve ever seen in your life. Its Caribbean coasts are so paradisiacal that they captivate every tourist who visits them. Additionally, the ancient cultures that inhabited the region left entire cities to be explored and discovered. Between astonishment and admiration for wonderful sites, you will discover villages that stand out for their beauty and tranquility. Definitely, if paradise has a branch, this is located in the Mexican Caribbean.

To the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, reaching the idyllic Holbox Island, there are some places you must visit. Nearby, there is a small, tranquil, and truly magical village called Solferino, which has existed for hundreds of years. This site is truly captivating for various reasons, but undoubtedly, the main one is that here several ancestral Mayan traditions are still preserved.

You will be amazed when you hear several of its residents speaking unknown languages in the streets. This is because the Mayan language is still preserved here, and many of the inhabitants speak it. You will see a large number of strange and mysterious symbols in their precious crafts, which allude to the beliefs of this immense empire that dominated much of Central and North America. The energy of pre-Hispanic peoples bathes every corner of this particular site in southeastern Mexico.

Previously, this village near Holbox was known as Labcáh, which in the Mayan language means “old town.” With the emergence of the Spanish and the arrival of farmers who dominated each of the territories of the Peninsula, the names of some localities began to change. Because of the color the trunks of the “dyewood tree” took on after the rains, which were exploited in the region, they decided to name it Solferino, in reference to one of the red tones so characteristic of this tree.

When you walk through these magical streets, don’t forget to stop by food shops and ask for old records, which in many cases are prepared using the same techniques and recipes that the ancient peoples introduced. You will definitely travel back in time through the flavors and learn about some of the particularities of Mayan culture that are still alive in villages like this.

Looking for alternatives to enjoy a few different days? Well, now you know, on your way to Holbox, make a stop in Solferino, a Mayan town surrounded by tropical jungle. How much beauty is spread throughout Mexico, and how could you not want to take in each of its aspects!
